Brisbane Olympics Chief Urges Politicians to Embrace 2032 Games

Brisbane Olympic Chief Andrew Liveris has called on local politicians to cease using the 2032 Games as a political football, urging them to acknowledge the 'great gift' of the global event.

Liveris noted his team has faced challenges due to shifting targets, particularly over venue plans, which were a contentious issue in recent elections. These disputes have impacted local sentiment, but Liveris remains optimistic about a positive shift in the next eight years. He emphasized the need for political cooperation to ensure the event's success.

'I really ask them to stop making the Olympics a political football. Please,' Liveris said in Paris. 'This is a gift. Let's harness the enthusiasm for this opportunity and ensure successful delivery regardless of the final venue decisions.'

Originally, plans included renovating Brisbane's Gabba cricket stadium for key events. However, cost concerns led to a review, with proposals for a new stadium at A$3.4 billion being rejected. Instead, existing venues like Lang Park and QSAC will be utilized.

Liveris stressed focusing on positive outcomes and maintaining a consistent long-term vision. He presented confidently to the International Olympic Committee, asserting Brisbane's ability to host an exceptional Games, while expressing eagerness to learn from the upcoming Paris and Los Angeles Olympics.
