From Huizhou to Paris: The Young Skateboarding Prodigy

Chinese park skateboarder Zheng Haohao had a childhood dream of competing in the Olympics, which she realized at the age of 11 years and 11 months. This makes her the youngest Olympian in Paris and China's youngest athlete in Olympic history. Born in Huizhou City, Guangdong Province, Zheng received her first skateboard on her seventh birthday and instantly took to the sport.

Her early training at a local club, under the guidance of an Asian Games champion, caught the attention of the Guangdong provincial team. They recruited her after seeing her perseverance and competitive focus. In 2021, Zheng debuted at China's National Games, finishing 14th.

By 2023, she was competing globally and qualified for the Paris Olympics after nailing a challenging 540 flip in Budapest. Despite just graduating from primary school, Zheng is prepared to join the women's park event in Paris on August 6. She's part of a new breed of Chinese athletes challenging the country's rigorous state-funded training norms. Skateboarding, newly added to China's national physical education curriculum, aims to foster creativity and mental resilience among young students.

For Zheng, the competition is about camaraderie rather than just winning. "Competition to me is just to get together with my good friends," she told CCTV, adding that she knows over 10 of the world's top 20 skateboarders.

Her approach embodies the spirit of one of the youngest sports in the Olympic lineup, reinventing the traditional image of Chinese athletes as strictly disciplined, hardworking individuals.
