Rio Olympic silver medallist Angelique Kerber will retire from tennis after the Paris Games, the German announced on Thursday. The 36-year-old, who has won three different Grand Slam titles, made her announcement via social media.

Kerber, who finished as the runner-up in Rio to Puerto Rican Monica Puig in 2016, has also captured the Australian Open and U.S. Open titles in the same year. She won Wimbledon in 2018 and reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros twice.

'Before the @Olympics begin, I can already say that I will never forget #Paris2024, because it will be my last professional tournament as a tennis player,' Kerber wrote on social media. 'The Olympics I've participated in so far have represented different chapters of my life as a tennis player: the climb, the peak ... and now, the finish line.'

After returning to the WTA Tour this season following an 18-month maternity break, Kerber will bow out with a commendable 14 tournament wins. 'Paris 2024 will mark the finish line of the most incredible journey I could have ever dreamed of growing up with a racket in my hand,' the tennis star added.

The draw for the Paris Olympics tennis tournament, scheduled from July 27 to August 4 at Roland Garros, will be held on Thursday.
