Former Indian all-rounder and head coach Ravi Shastri has endorsed the newly-appointed T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, urging him to focus on understanding the strengths and limitations of his bowlers to ensure success. As India prepares for the first T20I against Sri Lanka on Saturday, Suryakumar steps into leadership following Rohit Sharma's retirement from the format post the ICC T20 World Cup triumph.
Shastri, speaking on The ICC Review, emphasized the challenges Suryakumar will face, particularly in managing India's diverse bowling options. He noted that Suryakumar must quickly learn to set appropriate fields based on each bowler's capabilities, a tricky task for any new captain.
"Suryakumar has to recognize what his bowlers can and cannot do," Shastri said, adding, "He needs to focus on their strengths and set the fields accordingly." Shastri remains optimistic, pointing out Suryakumar's prior captaincy experience and his exceptional T20 skills should help him adapt swiftly to his new role. India's tour will feature three T20Is and three ODIs at Pallekele International Stadium and R Premadasa Stadium, respectively.
