Zhang Yufei: Swimming Clean Amidst Scrutiny
Chinese swimming star Zhang Yufei has faced extensive drug testing ahead of the Paris Olympics, undergoing between 20 and 30 tests monthly. Despite previous doping scandals, Zhang seeks to assure international competitors of her integrity. WADA and World Aquatics have confirmed rigorous testing protocols for Chinese athletes.
Chinese swimming star Zhang Yufei has expressed her hope that international competitors will believe she is competing clean. In the lead-up to the Paris Olympics, Zhang estimates undergoing between 20 and 30 drug tests monthly.
During the first day of the swimming competition at Paris La Defense Arena, Zhang won her preliminary race in 56.50 seconds, qualifying for the 100-meter butterfly final. She voiced her concerns about friends and competitors' perceptions following the doping scandal involving 23 Chinese swimmers before the Tokyo Olympics.
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) cleared the Chinese athletes, attributing the positive tests to contamination from a hotel kitchen spice container. Zhang won four medals, including two golds, in Tokyo. She now hopes for objective assessments from her peers and the public as World Aquatics ensures rigorous testing for Chinese athletes ahead of the Games.
