Manika Batra etched her name into the history books by becoming the first Indian table tennis player to reach the singles pre-quarterfinals at the Olympic Games, following a commanding 4-0 win over world number 18, Prithika Pavade, on Monday.
The 29-year-old Indian ace showcased an overwhelming performance, dismantling Pavade with scores of 11-9, 11-6, 11-9, and 11-7. This victory marks a significant milestone, surpassing Batra's previous best of reaching the round of 32 at the Tokyo Olympics.
Speaking to PTI, Batra expressed her satisfaction, stating, "I am happy that I beat a higher-ranked player in Paris. My focus remains on giving my best in the upcoming matches." Her tactical shift to exploit Pavade's backhand proved pivotal in securing the win. Despite Pavade's recent strong form, including a WTT final appearance, she couldn't overcome Batra's relentless assault, leading to a historic win for India.
