Manu Bhaker: India's Rising Shooting Star
At just 22, Manu Bhaker has already etched her name in Indian sports history by winning two medals in a single Olympics. She aims to continue her success in the upcoming 25m sports pistol event. Despite her achievements, Bhaker remains humble and dedicated, inspired by fellow athletes like Neeraj Chopra and PV Sindhu.
At just 22, Manu Bhaker has cemented her place in India's sporting history by clinching two medals at the same Olympics, a remarkable feat for any athlete. As she prepares for her final event, the 25m sports pistol qualifications on August 2, Bhaker's message to her supporters is simple: 'don't be disappointed' if she doesn't add to her medal tally.
Having already won bronze in both the women's 10m air pistol and mixed 10m air pistol events, Bhaker remains focused. 'I hope the love stays. I will definitely try my best. I hope people are not disappointed or angry,' she expressed, reflecting a sentiment common among elite athletes facing immense expectations.
Partnering with Sarabjot Singh, also 22, Bhaker easily overcame the Korean team in the mixed event. 'The feeling is surreal because I hadn't hoped I'll win two medals in a single Olympics,' said the historic shooter from Haryana's Jhajjar.
Despite a failed campaign at the Tokyo Games in 2021 due to a pistol malfunction, Bhaker's current performance has reaffirmed her dedication. 'After the experience in Tokyo, I realize how special winning this (medal) is,' she said, embracing the challenges that made her triumphs even more meaningful.
Comparisons to former sporting icons like Abhinav Bindra, who won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, don't deter her. Manu asserts she will continue striving for more glory. 'I can't say that about myself (becoming a female sporting icon); if people call me that then I am grateful. But my journey will continue,' she stated, maintaining her focus on continuous improvement.
Inspired by athletes like Neeraj Chopra and PV Sindhu, Bhaker, the second youngest Indian athlete to win an Olympic medal after shuttler PV Sindhu, exemplifies hard work and resilience. 'I've always looked up to athletes like Neeraj (Chopra), (PV) Sindhu. They have always been my seniors, I can't compare (myself with them),' she said, highlighting her role as a Target Olympic Podium Scheme athlete and her participation in the Khelo India Games.
