Chennaiyin FC suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to the Indian Army in their Durand Cup 2024 opener on Wednesday at the JRD Tata Sports Complex Stadium in Jamshedpur. The match's only goal was netted just before half-time.
Assistant coach Noel Wilson fielded a young team, with 20-year-old Bikash Yumnam as captain. Partnered by YV Praful Kumar in central defence, and flanked by winger-turned-fullback Alexander Romario Jesuraj and Sachu Siby, the youthful squad showed promise.
In midfield, Ngangom Raman Singh and Ganeshpandi S provided cover for the backline, while Komal Thatal and Vincy Barretto played wide. Irfan Yadwad led the attack, supported by youngster Lalpekhlua.
The first half highlighted Chennaiyin's defensive resilience against the Indian Army’s physical style and precise passing. Goalkeeper Samik Mitra was crucial, making two key saves before Liton’s powerful strike found the top corner in the 42nd minute. Irfan's two chances were thwarted by the opposition goalkeeper.
Post-break, Mitra continued to impress, preventing Shafeel PP from doubling the lead. Irfan and substitute Vishal R came close to scoring, but Chennaiyin could not find the equaliser. The team will aim to recover in their next match against Jamshedpur FC on August 4.
