Spain Advances to Paris Olympics Soccer Semifinals
Spain defeated Japan 3-0, with Fermin Lopez scoring twice and Abel Ruiz sealing the win, to advance to the semifinals of the men's soccer tournament at the Paris Olympics. Despite initial doubts after failing to win its group, Spain has now set its sights on reaching the final.
In a commanding performance, Spain secured a 3-0 victory over Japan to advance to the semifinals of the men's soccer tournament at the Paris Olympics. Fermin Lopez starred with a goal in each half, while Abel Ruiz sealed the triumph in the closing minutes.
Spain, silver medalists in Tokyo three years ago, arrived in Paris as favorites. However, early doubts emerged after the team failed to top its group following a defeat to Egypt. In contrast, Japan had a strong start, finishing at the top of its group with three consecutive wins.
Lopez opened the scoring with a low left-footed strike in the 11th minute and doubled the lead with a right-footed effort in the 73rd. Ruiz put the game beyond doubt in the 86th minute. A disallowed goal for Japan, due to offside, added to the drama. Spain will face Morocco next in their journey to the finals.
