Ukraine Triumphs in Women's Team Saber at Paris Olympics
Ukraine clinched its first gold medal at the Paris Olympics by defeating South Korea in the women's team saber fencing final. The Ukrainian team, led by Olga Kharlan, overcame a point deficit to secure the win. This marks Kharlan's sixth Olympic medal, following a controversial year.
Ukraine secured its first gold medal at the Paris Olympics by triumphing over South Korea in the final of the women's team saber fencing event on Saturday.
The Ukrainian team exhibited remarkable resilience, recovering from a six-point deficit to clinch the match 45-42. The standout performance came from individual bronze medalist Olga Kharlan, who delivered an impressive 8-2 victory in the final leg, turning the tide from a 40-37 disadvantage.
This victory adds to Ukraine's existing medal tally for the Games, which includes a silver in shooting from Serhiy Kulish and a bronze from Kharlan in women's saber earlier this week. Kharlan's emotional win this year is particularly notable, given her disqualification at the world championships last year for refusing to shake hands with a Russian competitor amid the ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Meanwhile, Japan claimed the bronze medal in the event, defeating France 45-40, even though the French team featured individual gold and silver medalists Manon Apithy-Brunet and Sara Balzer.
