Lakshya Sen's hopes for an Olympic medal evaporated as he succumbed to Malaysia's Lee Zii Jia in the bronze playoff on Monday.

The 22-year-old initially led but eventually lost 13-21, 21-16, 21-11, to the world number 7. 'I had my chances in the second set but credit to him, he played a really good game,' a dejected Sen remarked post-match.

Sen's loss signifies India's first Olympic badminton medal drought in 12 years. Nevertheless, the young shuttler set a new benchmark by becoming the inaugural Indian male to reach the Olympic semifinals, adding to his previous accolades of winning bronze at the 2021 world championships and gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
