Defending champion Neeraj Chopra set the stage ablaze as he stormed into the men's javelin throw final of the Olympic Games with a season's best effort of 89.34m on his very first attempt in the qualification round on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old Indian athlete crossed the automatic qualifying mark of 84m in his opening throw, clinching the top spot in Group B.

His remarkable performance not only put fitness concerns to rest, but also became the second-best throw of his career, behind his personal best of 89.94m set in 2022.
