Sreejesh Bids Farewell: A Legendary Final Act in Indian Hockey
Iconic Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh confirmed his retirement from international hockey after leading India to their second consecutive bronze medal at the Olympics. The 36-year-old athlete, renowned for his illustrious 18-year career, declared his decision final, despite fans' hopes for his continuation.
''This is the better way to finish,'' said iconic Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh on Thursday, ending speculation of a possible return to international hockey after inspiring India to their second successive bronze medal in the Olympic Games.
With Sreejesh playing his final match, India defeated Spain 2-1 in the third-place play-off, securing back-to-back bronze medals. This marked the first time since 1972 that an Indian hockey team achieved consecutive Olympic podium finishes.
''I think this is the better way to finish an Olympic Games, with a medal. We are not going home empty-handed, that's a great thing,'' Sreejesh stated on 'Jio Cinema'. ''I respect the sentiments of people who may have wanted me to continue. But some decisions are hard, and making the right decision at the right time makes the situation more beautiful,'' he said firmly, ruling out reconsideration.
Sreejesh, 36, from Kerala, had announced prior to the Olympics that he would retire at the end of India's campaign. ''The team did a wonderful job and made this game so beautiful,'' said Sreejesh, who is celebrated as the best goalkeeper India has ever produced.
Sreejesh was also a crucial part of the Tokyo 2020 bronze-winning team, which ended India's 41-year medal drought in hockey. ''Tokyo holds a special place in my heart. That (bronze) gave us back the confidence that we can win Olympic medals,'' said Sreejesh, known as the 'Great Wall of Indian Hockey', who played over 300 matches for India.
In Paris, Sreejesh was in excellent form, making several crucial saves both during regulation time and penalty shoot-outs.
