After Aman Sehrawat clinched a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, National Wrestling Coach Jagmander Singh expressed his mixed feelings, noting that while they aimed for gold, they settled for bronze. Sehrawat, making his Olympic debut, won the medal with a 13-5 victory over Puerto Rico's Darian Cruz on Friday, marking India's inaugural wrestling medal at the Paris 2024 Games.
Speaking to ANI, Jagmander articulated that Aman's performance in the bronze medal match on Friday was commendable. The national wrestling coach divulged that Aman has vowed to secure gold for the country in future competitions. "The performance was good. We were expecting gold but had to settle for bronze. However, I assure you, in the future, we will bring gold medals for the country… Aman has promised to win gold," Jagmander stated.
National wrestling coach Virender Singh mentioned that Aman had gained four and a half kilograms after his semi-final match and immediately began training to shed the extra weight. "We are delighted... Aman met the country’s expectations... After the wrestling concluded yesterday, Aman's weight had increased by about four and a half kilograms. We then trained for an hour and a half, rested for an hour, followed by a treadmill and sauna bath session," Virender Dahiya explained.
During the match, the Puerto Rican wrestler initially took the lead with a point from a single-leg hold. However, Aman quickly rebounded, scoring points by targeting Darian Cruz's shoulders. Although Cruz regained the lead with a two-point move, Aman eventually secured control.
With 37 seconds on the clock, Aman locked in additional points and won the bout through technical superiority as Darian Cruz, in a desperate maneuver, conceded another point.
