Indian hockey player PR Sreejesh praised wrestler Vinesh Phogat's resilience after she missed the women's 50kg freestyle final in the Paris Olympics. Despite being debarred for a minor weight issue, Phogat's positive attitude and sportsmanship have made her a hero to many. Her appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sports for a joint silver medal is still pending.
Indian hockey star PR Sreejesh lauded Vinesh Phogat for her remarkable resilience and composure amid adversity. The wrestler, who missed the women's 50kg freestyle final in Paris Olympics due to a minor weight issue, showed great courage, Sreejesh noted, when they met on Saturday.
Phogat, 29, was 100 grams above the weight limit during the morning weigh-in, resulting in her exclusion from the final. She has since appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS), seeking a joint silver medal. A decision on her appeal is awaited.
“She was understandably hiding her pain behind a smile,” Sreejesh said during the men's hockey team's felicitation for retaining their bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. He admired Phogat's strength and sportsmanship, expressing hope for a positive outcome from CAS, expected to announce its decision by August 13.
