Great Britain Cricket Teams Eye 2028 Olympics Return

The England Cricket Board and Cricket Scotland are in discussions to introduce men's and women's Great Britain cricket teams for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. Cricket will rejoin the Olympics for the first time since 1900, with a proposed six-team tournament details yet to be confirmed.

The England Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket Scotland have initiated discussions about the potential formation of men's and women's Great Britain (GB) cricket teams for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. This marks the sport's return to the Olympic stage for the first time since 1900, following a decision made last year. While specifics are yet to be finalized, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has proposed a six-team tournament for both categories, expected to unfold over a week with back-to-back matches.

"With the Los Angeles Olympics four years away, it's still early days, but we're in talks with Team GB and Cricket Scotland about the steps needed. Great Britain's Olympians again captured the nation's imagination with their performances in Paris, and we look forward to working together for the 2028 Olympic stage," an ECB spokesperson told ESPNcricinfo. Andy Anson, chief executive of the British Olympic Association, noted that England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland can unify, allowing one nation to lead while receiving support from the others.

"We have experience in golf, rugby, and women's football on how the Four Nations [England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland] come together and nominate one country as the main governing body, with support from others. Cricket will follow suit," said Anson. "The ECB will spearhead this initiative and collaborate with Cricket Scotland. We'll assist them in forming agreements to create a unified national governing body, similar to other sports, working closely with the ECB to make them a full-fledged National Olympic Committee member."

Team GB represents the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Olympic Team, giving athletes from both countries selection options. However, cricket in Ireland operates on an all-Ireland basis, meaning players like Mark Adair and Paul Stirling are unlikely to feature for Team GB. The venue for the Olympic cricket matches is undecided, with potential sites like a new stadium in Great Park, Irvine, or Oakland Coliseum under consideration. (ANI)
