Swiatek and Sinner Secure Semifinal Spots in Cincinnati Open

In Cincinnati, top-ranked Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner fought through stiff competition to secure spots in the semifinals of the Cincinnati Open on Saturday. Swiatek extended her winning streak to 15 matches with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 victory over 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva. The Polish star is set to face third-ranked Arnya Sabalenka, who defeated Liudmila Samsonova 6-3, 6-2.

Italian Jannik Sinner avenged his recent loss to No. 6 Andrey Rublev with a hard-fought 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory, making him the first Italian man to reach the Cincinnati semifinals in the Open era. “It was very windy and I tried to be as consistent as possible,” Sinner commented. Swiatek and Sabalenka have already clashed twice this year, with Swiatek coming out on top in both encounters at Roland Garros and Madrid. “We're both players that kind of deserve to be in semifinals and finals, because we work very hard,'' Swiatek stated, expressing her respect for Sabalenka.

Sinner will go up against No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev, the last former champion in the draw. Zverev secured his place in the semifinals by defeating Ben Shelton 3-6, 7-6, 7-5. Meanwhile, Frances Tiafoe advanced for the second consecutive year after his opponent, Hubert Hurkacz, retired due to a calf injury. In the women's draw, No. 6 seed Jessica Pegula reached her first Cincinnati semifinal after outlasting Leylah Fernandez 6-2, 6-7, 7-6. Pegula will meet Paula Badosa, who defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-3, 6-2. “Paula is really playing some good tennis,” Pegula remarked, acknowledging Badosa's form turnaround.
