Daniil Medvedev, former champion, advanced to the U.S. Open third round after defeating Fabian Marozsan 6-3, 6-2, 7-6(5) on Thursday. The Russian, who has had a rocky relationship with the Flushing Meadows crowd, appeared annoyed by the muted reaction to his victory.
Medvedev's uncharacteristic serving led to four double faults, but he capitalized on Marozsan's 45 unforced errors. The match highlighted six breaks of serve in the first set and was marked by poorly-timed drop shots from the Hungarian.
Despite this year's first-round exits in Canada and Cincinnati, fifth seed Medvedev secured his win with a leaping backhand on match point. He will next face Italian 31st seed Flavio Cobolli on Saturday.
