England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has left Arsenal after losing his position in the starting lineup to David Raya, joining Southampton in a notable transfer on Friday.

Ramsdale's move reportedly cost Southampton an initial 18 million pounds ($23.7 million) and includes a four-year contract, completed on the final day of the summer transfer window.

In a swift reaction, Arsenal signed Brazilian goalkeeper Neto from Bournemouth on a season-long loan deal to serve as Raya's backup.

Ramsdale, who was named in the Premier League team of the year two seasons ago but fell out of Arsenal's team last year following the signing of Raya, was also part of England's squad at the recent European Championship but did not play a game.

Forced to become Raya's deputy, Ramsdale chose to seize a new challenge at a team expected to battle relegation after promotion.

Ramsdale expressed enthusiasm about returning to the south coast, citing the ease of transition for his family and his excitement to get back to doing what he does best.

Southampton manager Russell Martin lauded the acquisition as a "statement signing," noting Ramsdale's talent and the significance of bringing in an England international with five caps. Martin acknowledged the club's management for making the transfer happen amid interest from several other teams.

Southampton, having opened the Premier League with two straight losses, hopes Ramsdale's addition will bolster their future performances.
