In a groundbreaking moment for Kerala, a human organ was successfully transported on a commercial airliner for the first time. K-SOTTO officials confirmed that a kidney, sourced from the late Ayona Monson, a 17-year-old from Kannur, was flown to Thiruvananthapuram for a transplantation procedure Thursday.
The meticulously coordinated operation saw the kidney carried aboard an IndiGo Airlines flight, overcoming logistical hurdles such as technical issues with using a helicopter. "The major challenge was transporting the kidney to Thiruvananthapuram in a time-bound manner," stated K-SOTTO executive director Dr. Noble Gracious SS. The execution involved cooperation between airline staff, hospital authorities, and newly joined organ transplant coordinator, Dr. Namitha.
Arrangements were made to ensure the organ's safety and swift transport. The flight, initially stopping over at Kochi, carried the vital organ to its destination, reaching Thiruvananthapuram by 10.45 am. The operation exemplifies a significant achievement in the field of organ transplantation logistics within the state. Meanwhile, the police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Ayona Monson's tragic demise.
