UK Statistics Agency Faces Potential Delay in Labor Market Overhaul
The UK's Office for National Statistics is considering delaying its revamped labour market survey by up to six months to May 2027, instead of the original November date. The Transformed Labour Force Survey aims to address declining response rates post-COVID-19, impacting data crucial for measuring the labor market.
Bloomberg News has reported that Britain's Office for National Statistics (ONS) is contemplating a delay in launching its revamped labour market survey. The agency, which faces declining response rates, might postpone the survey from its planned November debut to as late as May 2027.
While the ONS is keen on sticking to the original timeline, contingency plans are being evaluated, according to sources. Efforts to reach the ONS for comments outside business hours were unsuccessful, raising questions about its readiness.
The survey, a vital tool for unemployment and labor data, is hampered by pandemic-era challenges. As the Bank of England relies on this data, the ONS's difficulties complicate the labor market assessment, underscoring the importance of bigger samples and reduced biases in the new format.
