In a sweeping legal move, Pennsylvania federal prosecutors announced charges against 26 individuals for allegedly rigging bets on college and Chinese professional basketball matches. This case brings to light another instance of fraudulent behavior in the burgeoning industry of legalized sports betting in the United States.

The 70-page indictment includes names of over a dozen former NCAA basketball players, a former NBA athlete, and renowned sports-betting influencers previously caught up in an NBA gambling investigation. The charges cover bribery in sports, wire fraud, and conspiracy, according to statements from U.S. Attorney David Metcalf of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. He described the matter as an international conspiracy corrupting collegiate sports.

Prosecutors allege the betting scheme began in 2022 with bribes offered to Chinese Basketball Association players, expanding to U.S. college basketball by the 2023-2024 season. This extensive operation involved 39 players from 17 Division I basketball teams, millions wagered on fixed outcomes, and several hundred thousand dollars in bribes. Key defendants, including sports-betting influencers and former NBA talents, face serious charges, while legal representatives have largely remained tight-lipped.
