Oscar Piastri's win at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix has been hailed as "world class", underlining the young Australian's arrival in Formula One, according to his mentor and manager Mark Webber. The 23-year-old McLaren driver secured his second race win in Baku by passing Charles Leclerc and maintaining his lead despite a crash on the penultimate lap that led to a virtual safety car finish.
"This was one of the best drives I've ever seen him pull off," Webber remarked at the Baku City Circuit paddock. "Charles around here is absolutely magical, so to beat him was a pretty big deal. It was world class to say the least."
Piastri's maiden win at the Hungarian Grand Prix earlier this year was overshadowed by a team orders controversy. However, in Baku, his victory was unblemished, with team support from Lando Norris and a strategic pit stop that kept him ahead of Red Bull's Sergio Perez. McLaren's triumph has placed them at the top of the constructors' championship, well ahead of Red Bull.
