Half-centuries from Sarfaraz Khan and captain Ajinkya Rahane drove Mumbai's score against the Rest of India on Day 1 of the Irani Cup at Ekana Cricket Stadium on Tuesday. At stumps, Mumbai posted a total of 237/4, with Rahane and Sarfaraz unbeaten at 86 and 54, respectively.
After the Rest of India opted to bowl, an early spell from Mukesh Kumar saw Mumbai struggling at 37/3. Mukesh set the pace by forcing a thick edge with an angled delivery to dismiss Prithvi Shaw (4). In a subsequent ball, he removed Hardik Tamore before he could score. A short ball from Mukesh led to a top edge from Ayush Mhatre, safely caught by Dhruv Jurel.
With Mumbai's innings wavering, skipper Rahane stabilized the team by forming two crucial stands. An essential 102-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer for the fourth wicket brought Mumbai back into the contest, with both batsmen taking on the scoring responsibility.
A blend of traditional and unorthodox shots from Rahane and Iyer maintained a steady run rate. However, Iyer's half-volley shot was caught by Ruturaj Gaikwad, earning Yash Dayal his first wicket.
Mumbai's rhythm persisted with Sarfaraz Khan's arrival, finishing the day strongly. Rahane, recently fresh off a century for Leicestershire, ended the day unbeaten at 86 off 197 balls. Sarfaraz contributed significantly with a strike rate of 61.36, concluding the day at 54 from 88 balls.
Brief Score: Mumbai 237/4 (Ajinkya Rahane 86*, Sarfaraz Khan 54*; Mukesh Kumar 3-60) vs Rest of India. (ANI)
