As India readies itself for the Women's T20 World Cup, cricketer Shafali Verma offered a glimpse into her past experiences and future aspirations, particularly highlighting moments from the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and her goals for the tournament in the UAE. In an exclusive interview with Star Sports, Verma shared her reflections on playing in the 2020 Women's World Cup final at MCG.
Describing the overwhelming atmosphere, Verma recounted, "I couldn't hear anything because of the massive crowd. It was a new experience playing in front of such a big audience. I was initially lost in the atmosphere, but now I focus better. I wouldn't feel the same pressure if in that situation again," she commented. Verma also expressed her pride in winning the U19 World Cup, an achievement that still motivates her.
"Winning the U19 World Cup was monumental, not just for me, but also for my family, my country, and women everywhere. It was a day filled with tears of joy. That historic moment still drives me as I achieved something unmatched by any woman in India," Verma revealed. India launches their T20 World Cup campaign against New Zealand on October 4 at the Dubai International Stadium, aiming to excel after reaching the semi-finals previously.
Placed in Group A with teams like Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, the Indian team, ranked third globally, will face fourth-ranked New Zealand in a crucial game for both squads' knockout aspirations. India has shown impressive form in warm-up games against West Indies and South Africa, while New Zealand split their matches against the Proteas and England.
Both teams boast strong top-order batsmen, with India's Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma countered by New Zealand's Suzie Bates and Amelia Kerr. With both teams possessing robust batting and bowling options, spin bowling is expected to be a decisive factor in the outcomes. (ANI)
