Rafael Nadal announced on Thursday that he will retire from professional tennis at the age of 38, following the Davis Cup finals next month. The Spanish tennis legend exits the sport after amassing 22 Grand Slam singles titles, a career that coincided with the era of fellow Big Three members Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
In a heartfelt social media post, Nadal attributed his retirement to ongoing injury struggles, saying, “The reality is that it has been some difficult years, these last two especially. I don't think I have been able to play without limitations. It is obviously a difficult decision, one that has taken me some time to make. But in this life, everything has a beginning and an end.”
Excited to conclude his career at the Davis Cup in Malaga, Spain, Nadal has not played competitively since the Paris Olympics, where he was defeated by Djokovic in the singles' second round and reached the doubles' quarterfinals with partner Carlos Alcaraz.
