The New York Mets have signed free-agent infielder Jed Lowrie to a two-year, $20 million deal, multiple media outlets reported Thursday. Lowrie, 34, is coming off his best season. The first-time All-Star batted .267 with 23 home runs and 99 RBIs in 157 games with the Oakland Athletics in 2018. In 11 major league seasons, including with the Boston Red Sox (2008-11), Houston Astros (2012, 2015) and the A's (2013-14, 2016-18), the switch-hitter has compiled a .262 career average with 104 homers, 259 doubles and 509 RBIs.

He joins a Mets infield that includes the recently acquired Robinson Cano at second base and Todd Frazier at third. Lowrie has the versatility to play almost anywhere on the diamond, having appeared in 508 games at shortstop, 412 at second base and 145 at third. The signing, first reported by ESPN and The Associated Press, reconnects Lowrie with his former agent Brodie Van Wagenen, now the general manager of the Mets.
