In a thrilling start to the ICC Champions Trophy, England pacer Mark Wood showcased astonishing speed and control during the campaign opener against Australia on Saturday. While defending an imposing total of 352, Wood bowled a fiery first spell, maintaining an average speed of 151.2 kph over four overs. His efforts included the crucial dismissal of Steve Smith, putting Australia on the back foot early on.

Cricbuzz reported that Wood's pace dipped below 150 kph only twice during his 24-ball spell, with a top speed of 153.3 kph. According to CricViz, this was the fastest spell ever by an English bowler in ODIs and the quickest in ICC tournament history.

In the match, Australia opted to bowl first and initially reduced England to 43/2. However, Ben Duckett and Joe Root forged a 158-run partnership that helped propel England past the 200-run mark. Despite Australia claiming wickets regularly, Duckett's explosive innings of 165 runs set a new record for the ICC Champions Trophy.

Duckett's performance surpassed Nathan Astle's previous record of 145*, set in 2004. His remarkable knock contributed to England's highest total in Champions Trophy history, 351/8. Ben Dwarshuis was Australia's leading bowler with figures of 3/66.
