In an exclusive interview with ANI, India's chief badminton coach, Pullela Gopichand, highlighted a 'substantial gap in the ecosystem' for emerging athletes who don't hit the big leagues. He urged players to cautiously consider alternative educational opportunities given the slim odds of sporting celebrity.

Gopichand, once an All England Champion, pointed out that only a minuscule fraction of athletes achieve stardom, while a significant 75-80% still lack a safety net. He emphasized the need for a holistic approach, suggesting that young players maintain their studies alongside sports due to this substantial risk.

He praised the support from Prime Minister Narendra Modi but stressed the necessity of societal infrastructure to aid those who exit sports. A proactive approach with educational and skilling opportunities could ensure a dignified, fulfilling life for all athletes, regardless of their sporting success, according to Gopichand.
