After two scrappy wins to kickstart her campaign, world number one Simona Halep produced a majestic display to beat seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams 6-2 6-3 in the third round.

Up next, the Romanian will face Venus' younger sister Serena, who has recorded three straight sets wins on her quest for an eighth Melbourne title.

"I think I played my best match here this year," Halep said.

"It's always a big challenge to play against the Williams sisters so I was super motivated today.

"I have nothing to lose (against Serena). I play against a great champion. It's going to be a bigger challenge but I'm ready to face it."
