Rory McIlroy Weighs in on Tiger Woods' Latest Setback
Rory McIlroy expressed doubts about Tiger Woods returning to golf in 2023 after recent Achilles surgery. Though Woods revealed no recovery timeline, McIlroy anticipates a lengthy recuperation. Despite setbacks, Woods is believed to be eager to compete again, drawing on his past resilience and determination.
Four-time major champion Rory McIlroy expressed skepticism on Wednesday about the likelihood of Tiger Woods returning to competitive golf this year following surgery for a ruptured Achilles tendon. The 49-year-old Woods has not disclosed the full extent of his injury or a possible recovery timeline, but McIlroy foresees a lengthy rehabilitation period for the 15-time major winner.
"Yeah. It sucks. He doesn't have much luck when it comes to injuries and his body," McIlroy commented at TPC Sawgrass ahead of the Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Woods, who was ambitiously preparing for the Masters at Augusta, will likely miss the entire golfing season. "We obviously won't see him play golf this year, and hopefully we see him maybe play in 2026," McIlroy added.
Woods' latest injury further complicates a career already hampered by severe accidents and surgeries. Absent since failing to make the cut at the British Open last July, Woods remains a question mark for future tournaments. McIlroy, while refraining from predicting Woods' next moves, voiced confidence in his determination to return. Woods himself previously stated that while he doesn't plan a full schedule, he aims to prepare for select events annually.
