Kenya's Sumgong has doping ban doubled to eight years
Olympic marathon champion Jemima Sumgong has had her doping ban doubled to eight years after being found guilty by the IAAF of providing false information while defending herself against her initial sanction, the Athletics Integrity Unit have said. Sumgong was initially banned for four years by Kenya's anti-doping agency (ADAK) in 2017 after testing positive for the banned blood-booster erythropoietin (EPO).
Snowboarding: Former Olympic champion Clark announces retirement
Three-times Olympic medalist Kelly Clark, a trailblazer who pushed the progression of snowboarding to new levels, announced her retirement on Friday after a career that spanned 18 years as a member of the U.S. Snowboard Team. Clark is a five-times Olympian who at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games became the first American to win Olympic gold in snowboarding. She also has 13 snowboard world cup halfpipe victories and 21 consecutive superpipe appearances at X Games Aspen where she finished on the podium 14 times.
NBA notebook: Nuggets' Jokic suspended for Suns game
The Denver Nuggets did not have star center Nikola Jokic for Friday night's home game against the Phoenix Suns. Jokic was suspended one game without pay for leaving the bench Wednesday night during an altercation between teammate Mason Plumlee and Utah Jazz forward Derrick Favors, the league announced Friday.
Swimming: Olympic champion Adrian having treatment for testicular cancer
U.S. swimmer Nathan Adrian, a five times Olympic gold medalist, has announced he is undergoing treatment for testicular cancer with surgery scheduled for next week. The 30-year-old said on Instagram, where he was pictured in a hospital gown, that his sights remained set on competing at next year's Tokyo Summer Olympics, which would be his fourth Games.
NFL notebook: T.O. says Brown wants out of Pittsburgh
Calling himself a mentor of Antonio Brown, Hall of Famer Terrell Owens said Friday that the wideout "wants to move on" from the Pittsburgh Steelers, in part because of a fractured relationship with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Owens was asked on a Pro Football Talk podcast if he's gotten the impression Brown wants out.
NHL, NHLPA holding 'constructive' CBA talks
Both the NHL and NHL Players' Association sounded optimistic in discussing preliminary talks ahead of the end of the current collective bargaining agreement, with league commissioner Gary Bettman declaring, "We're not looking for a fight." Bettman and union representative Mathieu Schneider both spoke to reporters before Friday's Skills Challenge during All-Star weekend in San Jose, with each party complimenting the other for starting proactive discussions as the NHL and NHLPA try to avert a fourth lockout since 1994 before the current deal is up in 2022. Both sides have the choice to opt out of the current collective bargaining agreement in September.
Athletics: McLaughlin set to start pro career but not in hurdles
American Sydney McLaughlin makes her professional debut on a Boston track on Saturday but it won't be in the hurdles. The 19-year-old American will be chasing honours in her first 500 metres when the IAAF World Indoor Tour launches at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix.
Djokovic destroys Pouille to set up Nadal showdown
A rampant Novak Djokovic completed a stunning 6-0 6-2 6-2 demolition of Lucas Pouille on Friday to storm into his seventh Australian Open final and set up a mouthwatering title match with Rafa Nadal. The six-times champion was at his devastating best in the one hour and 23 minute procession as he gave the hapless Pouille a brutal lesson in Grand Slam tennis and extended his perfect semi-finals record to 7-0 at Melbourne Park.
Bears work out potential Parkey replacements
Cody Parkey appears to be as good as gone in Chicago. As many as seven free agent kickers, including Nick Folk, were scheduled to work out for the Bears on Friday, according to multiple reports.
Osaka, Pliskova chase double delight in Melbourne final
The rewards could not get bigger when Petra Kvitova takes on Naomi Osaka in Saturday's Australian Open final with one of them set to emerge as a fresh champion at Melbourne Park as well as the new world number one. Four months after stunning 23-times Grand Slam champion Serena Williams in the final of the U.S. Open last September, 21-year-old Osaka is one win away from becoming the first player since Jennifer Capriati to win the next Grand Slam after her maiden major title.
