In a surprising move, former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has voiced his concerns about the omission of Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal from India's Asia Cup squad. This announcement was made during a recently held press conference, attended by T20I skipper Suryakumar and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, following a selection meeting that included BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.
Expressing his views on his YouTube channel, Ashwin remarked, "Selection is a thankless job. You have to let someone out. There's sadness and disappointment when you talk to the excluded players. I hope someone has spoken to Shreyas and Jaiswal." Iyer, who enjoyed a stellar IPL 2025 season, scoring 604 runs at an average of 50.33, did not make the cut despite his performance.
Highlighting Iyer's accomplishments, Ashwin added, "Shreyas did exceptionally well during the Champions Trophy; his batting was stellar. If Shubman Gill's form is the reason, note that Shreyas is also displaying high-quality form." He emphasized Iyer's role in taking the Kolkata Knight Riders to IPL glory in 2024, followed by a successful stint with Punjab Kings.
Jaiswal, previously a backup opener for the T20 World Cup, had a successful IPL 2025 season, amassing 559 runs. Despite being a reserve for the Asia Cup, Ashwin lamented, "Jaiswal's recent performances have been outstanding. How can one overlook that? Both players have been crucial in their performances, leaving questions about their exclusion unanswered."
The Asia Cup schedule features India starting their campaign against the UAE on September 10, followed by a high-stakes match against Pakistan on September 14 in Dubai. The team will conclude the group stage against Oman on September 19 in Abu Dhabi.
