Nationals hire McKeon, 88, as senior adviser

Some guys just live for the game. Jack McKeon, a two-time National League Manager of the Year who is 88 years old, lives long for the game. His latest job in the major leagues is as a senior adviser for the Washington Nationals, according to multiple media reports on Tuesday.

The Nationals' director of player procurement is Kasey McKeon, Jack's 51-year-old son who is a former minor league catcher. Jack McKeon was 72 when he managed the then-Florida Marlins to a World Series title in 2003. He remained with the Marlins until deciding to retire in 2005, then came back to serve as their interim manager in 2011 for the rest of the season. At age 80, he became the second-oldest manager in major league history, surpassed only by Connie Mack.

Besides the Marlins, Jack McKeon managed four other big-league franchises, the Kansas City Royals (1973-75), Oakland Athletics (1977 and '78), San Diego Padres (1988-90) and Cincinnati Reds (1997-2000). The NL Manager of the Year with the Reds (1999) and Marlins (2003) posted a 1,051-990 record (.551) over 16 seasons. Jack McKeon also served as the general manager of the Padres from 1980-90, helping build a club that won its first NL pennant in 1984.

There is another senior adviser on the Nationals' staff who is older than Jack McKeon. General manager Mike Rizzo employs his 89-year-old father Phil, a longtime scout who joined the Nationals in 2009. --Field Level Media
