Rangers add RHP Hammel, 3B Davidson
The Texas Rangers signed right-hander Jason Hammel to a minor league contract on Friday and have reportedly agreed to a minor league deal with third baseman Matt Davidson. The Rangers said Hammel received an invitation to spring training. The 36-year-old endured a rough season with the Kansas City Royals last season when he went 4-14 with a 6.02 ERA in 39 appearances (18 starts).
Overall, Hammel is 96-114 with a 4.62 ERA in 377 appearances (298 starts) with the Tampa Bay Rays (2006-08), Colorado Rockies (2009-11), Baltimore Orioles (2012-13) Chicago Cubs (2014, 2015-16), Oakland Athletics (2014) and Royals (2017-18). The 27-year-old Davidson batted .228 with 20 homers and 62 RBIs in 123 games for the Chicago White Sox last season.
The Rangers are expected to also look at Davidson as a pitcher after the right-hander tossed three scoreless innings -- allowing one hit -- in three appearances for the White Sox last year. Davidson has a career average of .226 with 49 homers and 143 RBIs in 273 games with the Arizona Diamondbacks (2013) and White Sox (2016-18).
Also, outfielder John Andreoli was claimed off waivers by the San Francisco Giants. Texas designated him for assignment on Tuesday. --Field Level Media
