R Sridhar, a noted former India cricketer, has been named the fielding coach for the Sri Lanka men's team, an appointment set to last until the T20 World Cup 2026, according to ESPNcricinfo. Sridhar, who previously served as the senior India men's team fielding coach from 2014 to 2021, brings extensive experience to the role. A Level 3 certified BCCI coach, his recent involvement included overseeing a 10-day fielding program for Sri Lanka's premier teams in Colombo.
In his new position, Sridhar expressed his commitment to fostering an environment that enhances the natural athleticism and awareness of Sri Lankan cricketers. He emphasized building on the team's established strengths, such as quick hands, sharp reflexes, and fearless play, rather than imposing a systematic approach. "Sri Lankan players have consistently displayed instinctive brilliance and resilience," Sridhar remarked, "My goal is to nurture a culture where athleticism and field pride flourish."
This coaching reshuffle, which includes the appointments of Julian Wood as batting coach and Rene Ferdinands as spin bowling coach, comes after a challenging Asia Cup and Pakistan tour marked by fielding errors. Sridhar's expertise will be pivotal ahead of the series against Pakistan and England, as Sri Lanka gears up for the World Cup. Meanwhile, Pramodya Wickramasinghe has been selected to lead the new national selection committee, comprising former players like Vinothen John, Indika de Saram, Rasanjali Chandima Silva, and Tharanga Paranavitana.
