D-Backs' Greinke arriving late to spring training

The Arizona Diamondbacks conducted their first spring training workout on Wednesday without ace Zack Greinke. The team confirmed that the right-hander asked for a few extra days before reporting to camp with the pitchers and catchers in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Greinke, 35, is not injured and has been throwing bullpen sessions, including one on Tuesday, according to the Arizona Republic. The five-time All-Star and 2009 American League Cy Young Award winner is expected to take the hill on Opening Day against the Los Angeles Dodgers on March 28.

Greinke was 15-11 with a 3.21 ERA in 33 starts in 2018, striking out 199 batters in 207 2/3 innings. Over 15 major league seasons, he owns a 187-118 record with a 3.39 ERA and 2,435 strikeouts. --Field Level Media
