Major League Baseball (MLB) is set to return to Mexico City this weekend, in a strategic effort to broaden the sport's appeal beyond its traditional North American audience.
The two-game series featuring the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helu marks the league's third set of regular-season games in Mexico City under the 2023 World Tour initiative.
Despite scrapping plans for games in Paris and London due to scheduling conflicts, MLB has made Mexico integral to its international plans. Jeremiah Yolkut, MLB's senior vice president of global operations, emphasized the significant opportunity for business and player development in Mexico, where the league sees burgeoning interest and commercial potential.
