The race for playoff positions in the IPL 2026 has reached fever pitch, with Punjab Kings currently topping the points table at 13 points from nine matches. Following close behind are the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), with 12 points. Both teams are ardently striving to secure a place in the playoffs. Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan predicts a shift in tides, suggesting this year's IPL will crown a new champion.

Speaking on JioStar's 'TATA IPL: Out or Not Out,' Pathan expressed confidence in Punjab Kings' potential to clinch their first IPL title. "Punjab has a very good chance. They are playing impactful cricket and have a great combination. If Cooper Connolly starts bowling, which I feel completes their team strategy, they will be ready for the finals. With a fantastic Captain and openers in tremendous form, their bowling unit also boasts quality," he stated.

Pathan also remarked on Delhi Capitals' potential to break their title drought, noting, "Delhi is a good team. Their recent game against Gujarat Titans was a missed opportunity, but they remain in contention. Lucknow has work left to do, but my picks would be Delhi and Punjab, with Punjab slightly ahead." On the other hand, Suresh Raina supported RCB to successfully defend their title, praising Captain Rajat Patidar's leadership and backing Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans as strong contenders owing to their strategic plays, skillful captains, and peaking performances, highlighting a thrilling championship race ahead.
