India has intensified its long-term push to emerge as a global sporting powerhouse, with Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Dr Mansukh Mandaviya outlining an ambitious roadmap focused on governance reform, scientific athlete development and institutional strengthening during the National Sports Federation Conclave 2026.

The high-level conclave brought together representatives from 37 National Sports Federations (NSFs), including the Indian Olympic Association, to discuss India's strategic preparation for major upcoming international sporting events such as:

  • Commonwealth Games 2026

  • Asian Games 2026

  • Los Angeles Olympics 2028

The gathering marked one of the most significant national-level consultations on India's future sports strategy, governance structure and medal ambitions.

Government Targets Long-Term Sporting Transformation

Addressing the conclave, Dr Mandaviya described the event as a critical step toward coordinated preparation for India's upcoming international sporting commitments.

"The National Sports Federation Conclave marks a coordinated step towards India's preparation for upcoming global sporting events," the Sports Minister said.

He emphasized that India's sporting ambitions now require:

  • long-term strategic planning

  • scientific athlete training

  • stronger institutional coordination

  • advanced infrastructure

  • international competition exposure

  • athlete-centric governance systems

Officials indicated that the Government's broader vision extends beyond short-term tournament preparation toward building a sustainable sporting ecosystem capable of consistently producing world-class athletes.

Athlete-Centric Governance at Core of Reforms

A major theme emerging from the conclave was the need for stronger governance and accountability within National Sports Federations.

Dr. Mandaviya stressed that India's sporting progress depends heavily on better coordination between:

  • athletes

  • sports federations

  • coaches

  • support systems

"India's sporting future depends on stronger coordination between athletes, federations and governments," he stated.

The Minister called for reforms focused on:

  • transparency in administration

  • timely federation elections

  • accountability mechanisms

  • athlete welfare systems

He emphasized that athlete welfare must remain central to India's evolving sports governance framework.
