IOC Contemplates Future Games Return for Dropped Brisbane Sports

In a recent gathering of Summer Games sports officials, IOC President Kirsty Coventry disclosed that although some sports will not feature in the lineup for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, there exists a possibility for their future reintroduction. Coventry emphasized the need to streamline hosting processes, thereby ensuring competitive events remain viable.

The current focus, detailed at the ASOIF assembly, revolves around finalizing and clearly defining the sports roster for Brisbane, expected to feature fewer than the 36 sports estimated for the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Coventry acknowledged potential dissatisfaction from some sports organizations, reiterating that the IOC's primary ambition is to sustain, not damage, the sports landscape.

Determining the sports schedule is tied to venue logistics and costs, with a critical strategy meeting scheduled for June in Lausanne to establish evaluation procedures for both current and prospective sports. Potential future hosts are tasked with integrating these considerations into their bids, including Qatar for the paused 2036 Olympics contest.
