FIFA and FIFPRO Forge New Player-Governance Era
FIFA and FIFPRO have entered a landmark agreement establishing a formal role for players in football governance. The deal ensures player representation in FIFA's legal committees, creates a negotiation framework for transfer system changes, and sets up a $20 million fund to address unpaid player salaries until 2031.
In a groundbreaking development, FIFA and players' union FIFPRO unveiled a cooperation agreement on Wednesday, granting players a formal role in football governance. This agreement, valid until December 2031, acknowledges FIFPRO as the foremost global union for professional players.
The collaboration gives FIFPRO a seat on the FIFA Council and positions player representatives on FIFA's legal committees. Consequently, FIFPRO and its affiliates will withdraw existing lawsuits against FIFA and cease supporting any related legal actions. FIFA President Gianni Infantino hailed the deal as a 'new era' in the relationship between FIFA and FIFPRO.
Key elements include a negotiation framework for future changes in the transfer system and a $20 million fund to assist players with unpaid salaries. This initiative aims to safeguard player welfare and ensure collective agreement on critical changes to the football landscape.
