Yankees acquire 1B/DH Morales from A's
Kendrys Morales, who was designated for assignment by the Oakland Athletics on Monday, didn't have to wait long to find a new team, as the A's traded him to the New York Yankees on Tuesday. The Yankees announced that they picked up the first baseman/designated hitter and cash considerations from Oakland Athletics in return for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
The 35-year-old Morales, in his 13th season, is a career .267 hitter with 212 home runs and 735 RBIs. To start this season, he was hitting only .204 with one home run and seven RBIs in 108 at-bats. His slugging percentage of .259 was far below his career mark of .456. The Yankees will be Morales' eighth big-league stop, including two stints with the Seattle Mariners. He spent 2017-2018 with the Toronto Blue Jays, who traded him to Oakland on March 27 for Jesus Lopez and international bonus slot money.
Morales' best season came in 2009 with the Los Angeles Angels, when he hit 34 home runs, drove in 108 runs and hit .306. He finished fifth in the American League Most Valuable Player voting. The Yankees created a vacancy on their 40-man roster by moving right-handed pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga to the 60-day injured list.
