Charlie Blackmon homered twice and drove in four runs, Trevor Story also went deep, and the Colorado Rockies beat the San Diego Padres 9-6 on Thursday night in Denver. Rockies starter Jon Gray (6-5) struck out 10 and didn't walk a batter over six innings. It was the second time this season and 14th in his career Gray has fanned 10 or more batters. He gave up four runs on nine hits.

Manny Machado hit two homers, Wil Myers had three hits and three RBIs, and Fernando Tatis Jr. tripled, doubled and scored twice for the Padres. San Diego has lost five in a row. The Padres jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Tatis and Eric Hosmer began the game with doubles to produce the first run, and Machado singled to knock in Hosmer but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double.

Colorado responded in its half of the first off of Matt Strahm (2-6). Blackmon singled but was wiped out on Story's fielder's choice. David Dahl singled, and Story came home on Daniel Murphy's single. Ian Desmond drove both of them in with a double to give the Rockies a 3-2 lead. The story made it 5-2 with a two-run homer, his 16th of the season, in the second inning.

Myers led off the fourth with a double, moved to third on a single by Strahm and scored on a groundout by Greg Garcia. Blackmon, who finished 4-for-5, got the run back in with a homer to centre leading off the bottom of the inning. Machado made it 6-4 when he lined a homer into the seats in left with one out in the fifth inning. He hit his 12th homer in the ninth inning off Wade Davis.

Blackmon's second home run in as many at-bats restored the three-run lead in the sixth. It was the 12th multi-homer game of his career and second this season, both of which have come against San Diego. Tatis got the Padres back within two runs when he led off the seventh with a triple and scored on a Hosmer groundout. Blackmon made it 9-5 with a two-run triple in the bottom of the seventh.
