Panthers S Reid plans to kneel for anthem

Saying that he feels treatment of African Americans is "going backward," Carolina Panthers safety Eric Reid said he will keep taking a knee during the National Anthem before games. Reid, who joined the Panthers three weeks into the 2018 season, kneeled before every game last season, although no Panthers teammates joined him.

American Vollmer announces retirement from competing

Five-times Olympic champion Dana Vollmer will retire from competitive swimming after this week's national championships, the American said on Monday. The 31-year-old Vollmer, who overcame heart surgery as a teenager to win gold at the 2004 Olympics and set a world record on the way to winning the 100m butterfly at the 2012 Games, said it was time to focus on new goals and opportunities.

After Pan Am Games slam dunk, 3x3 basketball looks towards Olympics

The front page of FIBA's website offers a little teaser about its latest project: "From the streets to the Olympics" says basketball's world governing body in a pitch for the 3x3 version of the game. While the 2020 Tokyo Summer Games is where the sport will have its big reveal, there are a few stops along the way to Japan, including this week in Lima where 3x3 went "From the streets to the Pan Am Games".

NFL notebook: Dolphins fire offensive line coach

The Miami Dolphins fired offensive line coach Pat Flaherty in the first week of training camp, promoting analyst Dave DeGuglielmo into the role Monday. The NFL Network's Ian Rapoport tweeted that "Flaherty struggled to implement the new system, and it's been an issue since the spring. It's why DeGuglielmo was brought in." MLB notebook: Phillies acquire LHP Vargas from Mets

The New York Mets traded left-handed pitcher Jason Vargas to the Philadelphia Phillies for minor league catcher Austin Bossart on Monday. The Phillies also will receive cash considerations in the deal.

Hibi tops error-ridden Babos in Silicon Valley

Japan's Mayo Hibi battled back from 5-2 down in the third set to secure a 6-2 3-6 7-6(3) win over Timea Babos in the first round of the Silicon Valley Classic on Monday. Hibi benefited from 52 unforced errors from the Hungarian to claim one of the biggest wins of her career but will be the underdog when she next faces Maria Sakkari, who rolled to a 6-1 6-4 victory over Ekaterina Alexandrova later in the day.

Report: Minus holdout Elliott, Cowboys to sign RB Morris

On the same day that multiple media outlets reported that NFL rushing champion Ezekiel Elliott will be training in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, instead of joining his Dallas Cowboys teammates at training camp at Oxnard, Calif., the team has made a counterpunch. The Cowboys have agreed to sign running back Alfred Morris to a one-year contract, Pro Football Talk reported Monday after confirming with his agency Katz Brothers Sports.

U.S. take charge at Pan Am Games

The United States jumped clear at the top of the Pan Am Games medal table after sweeping the 3x3 basketball gold medals on Monday and every indication would suggest they are likely to remain there for duration of the two-week showcase. After hosts Peru got off to a dream start on Saturday by winning both marathons to briefly top the table, and a gold medal run on Sunday put Mexico at number one, the powerhouse U.S. flexed their collective muscles on Day Three.

Tsonga makes winning return to Citi Open

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga turned back the clock to defeat Canadian Brayden Schnur 6-4 7-6(2) at the Citi Open in Washington on Monday in his first match at the tournament in a decade. The 34-year-old Frenchman pumped his fists, leapt in the air and did a series of twirls after Schnur sent a backhand long on match point to end the first-round match on a scorching day in the nation's capital.
