Homer onslaught powers Reds past Phillies

Joey Votto singled, doubled, homered and drove in two runs to lead the Cincinnati Reds to an 8-5 win against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night. Jose Iglesias hit a pinch-hit solo home run in the seventh off reliever Jose Alvarez (3-4) to move Cincinnati back ahead 6-5, and relief pitcher Michael Lorenzen drilled a two-run blast in the eighth to make it 8-5.

Brian O'Grady had two hits in his second major league start, and Aristides Aquino contributed a two-run double in the four-run second inning for the Reds, who had lost six of seven. Reds right-hander Trevor Bauer was aiming to end a four-start losing streak. He was staked to an early 5-0 lead but gave up two-run homers to Logan Morrison and J.T. Realmuto in the fifth inning.

Lorenzen (1-4) surrendered a game-tying pinch-hit homer to Jay Bruce in the seventh, the lone run he allowed in two innings of relief and got the win. Bauer gave up four runs and six hits in five innings. He struck out six and walked two.

Phillies starter Aaron Nola allowed five runs and five hits in four innings, his shortest outing since May 13 against the Milwaukee Brewers. It was also the most runs the 26-year-old right-hander had allowed since mid-June. Nola, who struck out six and walked three, reached 200 strikeouts for the second consecutive season, becoming the youngest pitcher to reach that mark multiple times with Philadelphia.

Morrison pinch-hit for Nola with one out in the fifth and blasted a two-run homer to spark the comeback. Votto hit a solo homer in the first inning before Cincinnati scored four runs in the second.

O'Grady just missed a home run with one out, but settled for a triple, his first major league extra-base hit in his 13th at-bat. After walking Bauer to put runners on the corners, Nola got the second out on a strikeout, but Josh VanMeter dropped a two-out single into right-center, scoring O'Grady and putting runners back on first and third. Votto and Aquino followed with back-to-back doubles, driving in three more runs for a 5-0 lead.
