Leafs C Tavares (broken finger) out 2 weeks

Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares will be sidelined at least two weeks with a broken finger suffered in Wednesday night's loss in Washington. The 29-year-old center ranks fourth on the team with seven points (three goals, four assists) through eight games this season.

Tavares will be reexamined in two weeks, the team announced Thursday. That timeline would keep the six-time All-Star out of the Maple Leafs' remaining six games this month. Tavares tallied a career-high 88 points (47 goals, 41 assists) and played all 82 games in his first season in Toronto in 2018-19. He added two goals and three assists in seven playoff games.

The Ontario native played his first nine seasons with the New York Islanders, finishing his tenure there with 621 points (272 goals, 349 assists) in 669 games.
