Toronto Maple Leafs star John Tavares is returning to action on Tuesday night after missing seven games with a broken right index finger. Tavares indicated Tuesday he will be back on the ice for the home contest against the Los Angeles Kings.
"I've made really good progress and I'm ready to play so I'm looking forward to getting back out there," Tavares said after Tuesday's morning skate. The 29-year-old has been sidelined since suffering the injury when he was hit by a shot during a game against the Washington Capitals on Oct. 16.
Tavares is in his second season with the Maple Leafs after signing a seven-year, $77 million deal as a free agent. Tavares recorded a career-high 88 points (47 goals, 41 assists) and played all 82 games in his first season in Toronto in 2018-19. He added two goals and three assists in seven playoff games.
The six-time All-Star played his first nine seasons with the New York Islanders, finishing his tenure there with 621 points (272 goals, 349 assists) in 669 games. Toronto is 3-2-2 during the stretch without Tavares.
