Ottawa Senators forward Bobby Ryan returned to practice Wednesday for the first time since late November, when he took a leave of absence to enter the NHL's player assistance program. The 32-year-old Ryan is "a ways away" from returning to game action, head coach D.J. Smith told reporters. But the team embraced the return of the popular veteran who has compiled 551 points in 825 games with the Senators and Anaheim Ducks.

In 16 games this season, Ryan has one goal and three assists. He has not played since Nov. 16. "He's a really good guy," Smith said. "The guys like him. You can see they support him. When you have tough times, that's what teammates are for, family is for, and the guys were certainly happy to have him back."

Ottawa is 18-24-11 on the season. The team will host the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night.
