Samsung's new 1.4μm 50MP ISOCELL GN2 sensor offers more true-to-life pictures
Currently in mass production, the new GN2 sensor also offers you an option to take pictures in 100MP resolutions. The sensor uses an intelligent re-mosaic algorithm to re-arranging the color pixels and creates three individual layers of 50MP frames in green, red and blue which are further up-scaled and merged to produce a single ultra-high 100MP resolution photograph.

Samsung on Tuesday ISOCELL GN2, a new highly versatile 50-megapixel image sensor with large 1.4-micrometre (μm)-sized pixels. It features an innovative all-direction auto-focusing solution called Dual Pixel Pro that utilizes 100-million phase-detecting photodiodes for ultra-fast auto-focusing.
With 50 million 1.4μm-sized pixels on hand, the ISOCELL GN2 image sensor is claimed to offer exceptionally detailed photographs in regular settings while in a low lighting environment, the sensor can simulate a larger 2.8μm-pixel with four-pixel-binning technology to absorb more light, delivering brighter and sharper images.
In mixed-light environments, the GN2 sensor increases its dynamic range with a staggered-HDR feature that ensures rich detail and vivid color in highlights and dark shadows within the scene. Besides, Staggered-HDR is claimed to minimize the energy consumption of a sensor by up to 24-percent as compared to the predecessor’s real-time HDR mode.
As mentioned above, the Samsung ISOCELL GN2 image sensor offers Dual Pixel Pro, the company's most advanced phase-detection auto-focus solution yet, for faster and more accurate auto-focusing. In addition, the Dual Pixel Pro technology offers all-direction focusing by splitting the pixels not only vertically, as with Dual Pixel, but also diagonally.
Furthermore, the Samsung ISOCELL GN2 features Smart ISO that intelligently sets the sensor's conversion gain to take pictures using an optimal ISO; low ISO for brighter outdoors or high for dimmer indoors. There is also a Smart ISO Pro feature that leverages an intra-scene dual conversion gain (iDCG) solution, takes readouts from both high and low ISO to instantly create HDR images with less motion-artifacts.
Last but not least, the GN2 image sensor supports FHD video shooting at 480fps or 4K at 120fps.
